BMW Group partnered with Pasqal to integrate quantum computing into its production and development units.
BMW Group has continuously pushed the boundaries of innovation and therefore recognized quantum computing’s potential early on and established a dedicated team in 2021. To accelerate this journey, BMW partnered with Pasqal to integrate quantum computing into its production and development units.
Pasqal, a leader in quantum computing, develops quantum processors from neutral atoms arranged in 2D and 3D arrays. It is this cutting-edge technology that BMW Group envisions to address complex manufacturing challenges by optimizing production workflows and materials research that are beyond the reach of classical computing. Pasqal’s collaboration with BMW exemplifies how quantum computing can deliver real-world solutions, transforming industrial processes.
In the Driver’s Seat Together
The collaboration between Pasqal and BMW Group began with the BMW Group Quantum Computing Challenge in 2021. Pasqal developed a solution that promised significant improvements in simulation accuracy and efficiency, which are critical for BMW Group’s manufacturing processes. Pasqal’s digital-analog implementation of quantum algorithms, tailored for their neutral-atom quantum processors, could also be adapted to this solution, potentially improving circuit design efficiency compared to alternative architectures.
The first Proof of Concept (PoC) project between Pasqal and the BMW Group focused on optimizing the metal forming process. This involved simulating the stamping of metal sheets to predict material behavior and identify optimal manufacturing parameters. The promising results from this project led to further collaborations, including a multi-year partnership with Ansys for structural analysis and crash simulations.
Pasqal’s researchers have visited the BMW Group facilities in Munich multiple times, and BMW Group’s engineers have spent time at Pasqal’s locations in France and the Netherlands. This hybrid working model fosters a strong, collaborative spirit, allowing both teams to leverage their respective expertise effectively.
Pasqal’s access to quantum hardware and their deep understanding of quantum algorithms have been instrumental in advancing the BMW Group’s quantum computing projects. Regular workshops and meetings also ensure continuous knowledge transfer and skill development.
The Road Ahead for Quantum
Looking ahead, BMW Group potentially sees quantum computing playing a crucial role in various aspects of automotive manufacturing. The ongoing projects with Pasqal and other partners are expected to yield significant improvements in simulation accuracy and efficiency, leading to safer, lighter, and more fuel-efficient vehicles.
